A Different Way to a Perfect Ending

Chapter 1

On a cold clear night in New York, if one was to look hard enough in the sky, one would see a flying girl with long auburn hair and two very distinctive white streaks. If one was to look even closer, he would see that the girl has been clearly crying on the long flight home. The girl was simply known as Rogue.

As Rogue reached the rooftop of the Xavier Institute for the Gifted Learning, she thought about the unsuccessful journey she just had. She looked so hard this time, and she was so sure she would find him. Crack. She heard someone behind her, and hoping with all her heart, she called out the name of the only person she ever wishes to see again, "Remy?"

"Sorry, Rogue. It's just me." Replied an unsure Wolverine.

"What are y'all doing up here?" Asked a sullen Rogue.

"Just needed the fresh air, and I thought I smelled someone up here from the top floor. So, been looking for the Cajun again?" Wolverine stated more than asked.

        "Ah was just."

"You don't have to answer," interrupted Wolverine. "I know you were. Rogue, this has been the fifth time this week. You're not going to find him."

"How de hell do y'all know tat?" Snapped Rogue.

"Look, if it's one thing I learned about the Cajun is that if he doesn't want to be found, he'll make sure he won't be found." Wolverine softly replied.

"How are y'all not so sure he's not dead or sometin'? Wolverine, why did Ah do what Ah did? Ah love him so much, yet Ah let the only man who has ever meant more to me den anytin', drop to his death. Ah don't deserve to live." Cried Rogue as she buried her face into her hands, finally accepting the fact of the horrible deed she has done.

Wolverine sat down next to her, and placed an arm over her shoulders. "Rogue, it wasn't you that wanted to drop him. It was his mind in yours that wanted you to drop him. And don't even start about how if you loved him, you would have been strong enough to fight it. Fact of the matter is, the Cajun has built up so much self-hatred over the past years, that even your incredible strength wouldn't have been able to fight it. Rogue, the only thing I know is that Gambit is tough, and he's not dead. In your heart you would know it if he had died, and I'm sure you haven't felt it yet, or I doubt even you would be sitting here. Just try to get some sleep, and the Cajun will return when he wants to." Wolverine said, and was about to get up when Rogue reached for his arm.

Rogue looked up at him, and simply said, "Wolvie, thank y'all. Ah really appreciate' it."

"Anytime. So you coming or not?" Wolverine asked while extending his right hand for her to take.

"Ah will, in a second. Ah just need to get mah head straight." Rogue replied.

"Alright." Wolverine got up and climbed down the very way he got up there while the southern belle watched the stars and wished for the millionth time that her love will come back.

        * * *

As Rogue entered through her bedroom window, she could hear voices just outside her door. She slowly hovered herself towards the door, making sure she doesn't make a sound. She placed her right ear next to the door and listened intently.

"I'm sure I saw him, we need to tell her." Whispered a determined Kitty Pryde.

"How do we even know he wants to see her? We don't know his plans, we don't know how long he's been there or what he has been doing? What if you're wrong, and we just set her up for disappointment?" Answered a very unsure Orroro.

Who are they talking about and telling who what? Rogue asked herself. Could it be Remy? Suddenly feeling anxious, she resumed listening.

"Look, Rogue isn't even in. I'm sure that she flew to Antarctica again looking for him. Why don't we talk about this some more a little later, and maybe make a flight down there to make sure it is Remy? We'll tell her when we know for sure. Agree?" decided the strong-willed Storm who was pondering that if Remy had made it out of Antarctica, why hadn't he bothered to contact the X-Men. It's because you all betrayed him. She answered herself and let out a deep sigh.

So, they were talking about Remy. They found him. Ah just need to know where he is. Ah'll go there right now without even them knowing. Just give me a name Kitty. C'mon any name. Rogue silently pleaded to herself.

"Fine. I guess that makes sense. I mean, I think I saw him, but it's better to make sure. I don't want to be upsetting Rogue anymore than she already is. She's been through enough. I'm just glad she wasn't in tonight or heard any of this, she would have flew right here and now to find him. And if I was wrong, she would hurt so much. We'll do it your way, Orroro." Replied Kitty as she and Orroro walked down the stairs to the rec room.

Dammit. If they won't tell me willingly, then I'll just have to make them. Rogue thought as she was about to open the door and confront them.

No, don't do it, Rogue. They'll tell you in due time. Plus, what if they were wrong, then you'll be even more pain than you already are. What if Kitty was wrong and he isn't there where he's supposed to be? Then what? You'll just be one more closer to the idea of him being dead. When they do tell you, at least you will know he's alive. Wait until they tell you. Reasoned Rogue. She decided to change out of her uniform, into Remy's old long black t-shirt which she could still smell a hint of that spicy musky cigarette smell that Remy always generated. She climbed into bed, closed her eyes, whispered, "Ah love you, Remy, wherever you are," and fell into a deep sleep.
